California victory – a great step forward

The California Assembly yesterday passed the End of Life Option Act (43 votes for to 34 against).  This will provide the same assisted dying option as in Oregon, Washington, Vermont and a couple of other US States.  This means that doctors will be able to prescribe drugs for terminally ill patients to take themselves to end their lives.   It will now go to the Senate which passed a similar Bill only three months ago by a narrow margin.  Read more …

This is a very significant achievement which shows the tide has well and truly changed. We agree with the Helen Joyce, the editor of the Economist (see news on her speech to the Festival of Dangerous Ideas), that things can change quickly. Something like this can help that happen and will provide a very welcome boost to the arguments for the new Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill to be moved in the Tasmanian Parliament before long.
