Canadians are getting their choice of doctor-provided assisted dying

According to a recent media report, at least 20 people in Quebec have now taken advantage of the voluntary assisted dying choice provided by the Quebec Act Respecting End of Life Care. 

The Act was passed in June 2014 in a cross-Party vote of 94 – 22 after years of consideration and consultation through a Parliamentary Committee, whose excellent report Dying with Dignity paved the way for a principled and well-informed debate.  Despite legal action, the legislation came into effect in December 2015 and the first person accessed legal doctor-assisted dying in January this year.

The same media report includes information that a Calgary woman had become the first person outside Quebec to access voluntary assisted dying through the Supreme Court decision.  Other articles report on access to assisted dying this way in the provinces of Ontario and Manitoba Because this is happening, there is great pressure on the Canadian Parliament to pass their assisted dying Bill by 6 June to meet the Supreme Court’s deadline.  Read more …
