In the last week, Dr Rodney Syme has taken the very courageous action to reveal that he supplied Steve Guest with Nembutal before his death in 2005. There have been a number of articles in the national and Victorian press about Rodney’s action and why he is “calling out” the conspiracy of silence on this issue.
For more information, including the risk that Rodney could be charged for his compassionate behaviour, see the articles in the Saturday Paper – http://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/society/2014/05/03/breaking-the-law-force-euthanasia-debate/1399039200#.U2mO8PmSySq – and the Age – http://www.theage.com.au/national/doctor-challenges-euthanasia-law-that-calls-mercy-a-crime-20140427-37bsk.html
There was also an article ‘Aiding and abetting suicide in terminal illness’, by Steve Ellen, Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Monash University at The Conversation – http://theconversation.com/aiding-and-abetting-suicide-in-terminal-illness-26095. DwDTas views are different from Professor Ellen’s in a number of ways but, like him, we hope that Rodney is successful in getting lawmakers to address this critical issue.
We are planning our own action towards another Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill in Tasmania.
