True to form, the opponents of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill are trotting out the same fallacious claims used in every campaign against similar legislation and the same lack of respect for people’s right to make their own choices according to their own beliefs and values.
One of the main offenders is AMA Tasmania whose spokesperson went as far as implying that none of us have the ability to even make our own decision for assisted dying. Dr Tim Greenaway, said: “We don’t know about the the capacity of individuals at the end of life to make these decisions” (ABC news – http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-27/some-doctors-call-for-a-referendum-on-voluntary-euthanasia/4984048).
You may have seen Marshall Perron’s response to that – and their other claims with no basis in fact – on ABC TV news on Friday that this very patronising attitude by doctors is obsolete.
