Great WA result for voluntary assisted dying legislation

Great news – WA has elected a Premier who supports voluntary assisted dying legislation and his views were well known before the election. Mark McGowan will become the 4th Premier to support such legislation, following Tasmanian Lara Giddings, SA’s Jay Weatherill and Victoria’s Daniel Andrews.

Our then Tasmanian Premier, Lara Giddings, led the way with the 2013 Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill. The vote on an SA Bill last November was virtually the same as the Tasmanian vote – it lost by the narrowest of margins. The SA Bill was supported by the Premier, Jay Weatherill, but he did not initiate or move the Bill. In Victoria, Premier Daniel Andrews has committed his Government to a Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill later in 2017.
