There has been some very positive news coverage in the last two days about a new assisted dying Bill, including the commitment of Lara Giddings to the Bill, the open-minded approach by Liberal MPs, Roger Jaensch and Joan Rylah (Braddon MPs), and Lara’s willingness to work with them on the Bill.
The coverage has included a frontpage article in the Examiner yesterday, 15 July and another one today, 16 July. The ABC included an item on today’s radio news. There has also been an article in the Mercury today (no link), quoting the President of DwDTas encouraging Liberal MPs to work with Ms Giddings to have their concerns allayed. We have been working on proposed amendments to the 2013 Bill and aim to meet soon with Ms Giddings and other MPs to discuss our recommendations.
This afternoon DwDTas sent out a media release welcoming these developments because a cross-party collaborative effort is the best guarantee of effective and safe legislation that meets the needs and wishes of the broad community. The President, Margaret Sing, expressed concern about the AMA continuing to repeat fears instead of doing research and making evidence-based decisions as they do in their medical practice and on other issues. She said it was also of concern that the AMA was presenting such a one-sided view rather than representing the different views of members.
