The Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2013 was defeated in the Tasmanian House of Assembly tonight, effectively 13 votes to 12.
The formal vote will be regarded as 13-11, because the Speaker, Michael Polley, came into the House at the very last minute in order to vote against the Bill and the Deputy Speaker, Tim Morris, had to stay in the Chair. After the vote, Tim Morris stood and stated he was in favour of the Bill.
So close and next time the result may be different! This legislation will not go away because the need will not go away and the support of the vast majority of the population will not go away. Thank you especially to Lara Giddings and Nick McKim for their ongoing and commitment to providing a legal option of voluntary assisted dying. Thank you to their wonderful staff who worked so hard for over 2 years on the Bill. Thank you to everyone for your messages of support. We will have plans for renewed action!
