Our television advertisements has now been running for a week on all Tasmanian commercial television stations. We are heartened by the positive response through calls, comments to office bearers and committee members, visits to the website and Facebook ‘likes’. Getting permission for the ads was a tortuous process. The ones we wanted to run were rejected because the words ‘voluntary assisted dying’ would “encourage or promote suicide”. In the next few days we will put both sets of ads on our website so you can decide for yourself.
The proposed Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill will be moved in the Tasmanian Parliament soon by the Premier, Lara Giddings, and the Leader of the Greens, Nick McKim. We urge you to let your Tasmanian member of Parliament know you want a choice and you support the legal option of doctor-provided voluntary assisted dying. You can do this with a phone call, an email, a message on their website or Facebook, or a letter. Here are the contact details for members of the House of Assembly – HAList – and the Legislative Council – Leg Co list.
You can see a summary of what was proposed in their consultation paper issued in February this year – Summary of proposed voluntary assisted dying law – v21Feb13. the details of their proposal for the legislation – Voluntary Assisted Dying – A Proposal for Tasmania, in their short paper 20130203 FINAL Short Paper – Voluntary Assisted Dying. As soon as the Bill is available, we will review it on our website.
